Change your hair care routine in the fall.
It's time to start a new chapter when it comes to your hair care routine, says Nicolas from Santos hair. See his top tips for great fall hair below.
Dry and fluffy
As summer turns to autumn, the colder, rainier weather outside and the central heating inside combine to create “the perfect cocktail of misery” that dries out your hair and scalp. Your hair may also be brittle and damaged by the summer sun, chlorine and salt.
During the fall/winter months it's a good idea to wash your hair less often and use a dry shampoo like our Fresh Hair from Kevin Murphy.
Switch to hydrating shampoos and conditioners to strengthen and protect your hair and prevent further damage. Your hairdresser can recommend the right ones for your hair, so ask. We are fans of Kevin Murphy’s Nourishing & Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner .
Smooth, smoother, smoothest…
You can’t avoid the fall weather, but if you hate frizzy hair, you can ward it off. Try patting your hair dry after washing, rather than rubbing it with a towel, as this can damage the hair cuticle, making it more prone to frizz. Also, smooth the cuticle by combing through your conditioner with a wide-tooth comb (always from bottom to top).
Celeste says: 'A brilliant treatment for controlling frizz when you're out is Kevin Murphy's Untangled as it fits in your handbag or gym bag for quick fixes.'
When all else fails, harness the art of updos - style yourself with a twisted braid or rock a messy bun. If you're not sure how to create an updo that suits you, ask us next time you're in the salon.
TLC…
A little extra TLC (Tender Loving Care) as winter approaches will make a real difference to the look and feel of your hair, so enhance your normal hair routine for fall:
[1] Get a regular trim to keep split ends under control. Damaged hair doesn't reflect light well, making it look dull.
[2] Avoid using bristles or brushes with metal teeth - ventilated brushes (with holes in them) with rounded teeth are best. Ask your salon for more advice on the best brushes for your hair.
[3] Use a weekly mask treatment to help your hair retain moisture, reduce frizz, and increase shine.
“We are currently recommending K18 to our clients to soothe and protect your hair from the dryness of fall & winter,” say Celeste and Nicolas.
[4] Hot water can strip your hair of essential oils, leaving it dry and dull. It’s tempting to take a hot shower on a chilly morning… but wash your hair with lukewarm water instead.
[5] Don't neglect your scalp, which can become dry and itchy as winter approaches. Try a scalp treatment or leave-in conditioner from RainPharma, for example, or an exfoliating product such as Nuori's Vital Foaming Cleanser (a cleanser based on exfoliating enzymes for the face and scalp).
