Retinol for your skin

|Maarten Sierens

Retinol is a powerful vitamin A ingredient that supports skin renewal and is often chosen for fine lines, pigmentation spots, imperfections, and uneven skin texture. However, it requires a gentle, consistent approach: starting too quickly can cause dryness, redness, or flaking.

At SieroSanto, we are happy to help you choose a vitamin A routine that suits your skin and current skincare regimen. This way, you give your skin time to adjust and you work step by step towards a smoother, more even, and resilient complexion.

What does retinol do for your skin?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A and belongs to the retinoids. After application, it is gradually converted in the skin to its active form, which skin cells can use. This process generally makes retinol milder than prescription retinoids, but it also means that visible results require time and regular use.

Properly built-up retinol use can support natural cell renewal. As a result, the skin may look more refined and even over time. Retinol is mainly used when your skin needs support with:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles: retinol helps to improve skin structure and supports a firmer appearance.
  • Skin texture and enlarged pores: a more regular renewal process can make the skin appear smoother.
  • Uneven skin tone and pigmentation spots: retinol can contribute to a more even appearance, provided you consistently use sun protection during the day.
  • Imperfections: the ingredient can play a valuable role in a routine for skin prone to blockages.

Do not expect immediate effects. Often, you only notice after six to twelve weeks that your skin looks calmer, smoother, or more even. For a visible difference in fine lines and pigmentation, a longer, consistent routine is needed.

Retinol, retinal, and retinoids: what's the difference?

Retinoids is the collective name for vitamin A derivatives. Retinol is the best-known form in cosmetic skincare. Retinal, also called retinaldehyde, is one step closer to the active form in the skin. It can therefore be an interesting choice for those who want to work purposefully with vitamin A, but the correct strength and build-up remain essential.

The best choice depends not only on the percentage on the packaging. The formula, your skin barrier, other active ingredients in your routine, and how often you use the product also determine how well your skin tolerates it. Those who start usually benefit more from a retinol serum with a low concentration and a feasible usage schedule than immediately opting for the highest strength.

How to use retinol safely?

Preferably use retinol in your evening routine. Apply it to cleansed, dry skin and follow with a hydrating cream if your skin needs it. Dry skin can react more sensitively, so adequate hydration helps maintain comfort.

  1. Start one to two evenings per week.
  2. Use a small amount and initially avoid the eye contours, corners of the mouth, and nasolabial folds.
  3. Only increase to every other evening after a few weeks if your skin remains calm.
  4. Build up further according to your skin's tolerance, not according to a fixed pace.
  5. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, such as Sun Protection SPF.

Retinol does not literally thin your skin. During the acclimatization period, it may feel drier or more sensitive, making it temporarily appear more vulnerable. By building up slowly and supporting your skin barrier, you limit the chance of discomfort. Also read Retinol for beginners for more explanation on a gentle build-up.

Using retinol and hyaluronic acid together

Hyaluronic acid and retinol complement each other well. Where retinol focuses on skin renewal and skin structure, hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture in the skin. This can be particularly pleasant when retinol causes a tight feeling or dryness.

You can use a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid before your retinol product or opt for a nourishing cream afterwards. Most importantly, listen to your skin: if it feels dry, irritated, or tight, reduce the frequency of retinol and temporarily focus on repair and hydration.

Which ingredients should you combine cautiously with retinol?

A simple routine often works best when you start with retinol. Avoid combining it with multiple intensive active ingredients in the same evening routine, especially if your skin is not yet accustomed to vitamin A.

  • AHA and BHA acids: it's better to use them on alternate evenings to limit over-irritation.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: do not combine this without personal advice, especially for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
  • Other retinoids: do not use multiple vitamin A products simultaneously unless explicitly advised.
  • Vitamin C: read more about Using Retinol and Vitamin C together; for many skin types, vitamin C fits well into the morning routine, while retinol is used in the evening.

For sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema, or a damaged skin barrier, personal advice is extra important. Sometimes it is wiser to first calm and strengthen the skin before adding retinol. Also check our selection Retinol for sensitive skin.

What to do for redness, flaking, or irritation?

Slight dryness, flaking, or redness can occur when you first start using retinol. This is usually a sign that your skin needs more time to adjust, not that you should push through. Stop temporarily or use the product less frequently until your skin feels comfortable again.

Then opt for a gentler build-up, use a milder vitamin A product, or apply retinol over a thin layer of hydrating cream. In this phase, place extra emphasis on Repair and calming. If irritation persists, is pronounced, or you experience a burning sensation, stop using the product and seek advice from a doctor or skin expert.

Frequently asked questions

Is retinol really good for your skin?

Retinol can be a valuable ingredient for the skin when used correctly. It supports skin renewal and can help achieve a smoother texture, a more even complexion, and soften visible signs of skin aging. It is not the right choice for every skin type or situation, which is why a suitable formula and a gradual introduction are important.

What are the disadvantages of retinol?

The main disadvantages are temporary dryness, redness, flaking, and sensitivity, especially when you start too often or combine too many active ingredients. Retinol also requires daily sun protection. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy and breastfeeding without first seeking advice from your doctor or midwife.

Why is retinol being banned?

Retinol is not generally banned. Within European cosmetic regulations, there are restrictions on the amount of vitamin A derivatives in cosmetic products. These rules are intended to control overall vitamin A exposure, not because retinol is inherently unsafe when used correctly in cosmetics. Always choose products that comply with applicable European regulations.
