Change your hair care in the fall.
It's time for a new chapter when it comes to your hair care routine, says Nicolas from Santos hair. See his top tips below for great autumn hair.
Dry and fluffy
As summer turns to autumn, the colder, rainier weather outside and the central heating inside will combine to create "the perfect cocktail of misery", drying out your hair and scalp. Your hair may also have become brittle and damaged by the summer sun, chlorine and salt.
In the autumn/winter months it is a good idea to wash your hair less often and use a dry shampoo such as our Fresh Hair from Kevin Murphy.
Switch to moisturizing shampoos and conditioners to strengthen and protect your hair and prevent further damage. Your hairdresser can recommend the right one for your hair, so ask. We are fans of Kevin Murphy's nourishing & moisturizing shampoo and conditioner .
Smooth, smoother, smoothest…
You can't avoid the fall weather, but if you hate frizzy hair, you can ward it off. Try to pat your hair dry after washing, rather than rubbing it with a towel, as this can damage the hair cuticle, making hair more prone to frizz. Also smooth the hair cuticles by combing through your conditioner with a wide-toothed comb (always from bottom to top).
Celeste says: 'A brilliant treatment to control frizz when you're away is Kevin Murphy's Untangled , as it fits in your handbag or gym bag for quick fixes.'
When all else fails, use the art of updos – make yourself stylish with a twisted braid or rock a messy bun. If you're not sure how to create an updo that suits you, just ask us the next time you're in the salon.
TLC…
A little extra TLC (Tender Loving Care) as winter approaches will make a real difference to the look and feel of your hair, so step up your regular hair routine for fall:
[1] Maintain a regular cut to control split ends. Damaged hair does not reflect light well, making it look dull.
[2] Avoid using bristle bristles or brushes with metal teeth - ventilated brushes (with holes in them) with rounded teeth are best. Ask the salon for more advice about the best brushes for your hair.
[3] Use a weekly mask treatment to help your hair retain moisture, reduce frizz and increase shine.
'We currently recommend K18 to our customers to soothe and protect your hair from the dryness of autumn & winter,' say Celeste and Nicolas.
[4] Hot water can strip hair of necessary oils, leaving it dry and dull. Tempting to take a hot shower on a chilly morning... but prefer to wash your hair with lukewarm water.
[5] Don't neglect your scalp, which can become dry and itchy as winter approaches. Try a scalp care or leave-in conditioner from RainPharma, for example, or an exfoliating product such as the Vital Foaming Cleanser from Nuori (a cleanser based on exfoliating enzymes for the face and scalp).
